Prof Steven Haberman
Professor of Actuarial Science and Deputy Dean
Professor of Actuarial Science, Director and Deputy Dean of Cass Business School, City University London. Steven graduated in mathematics from the University of Cambridge, (Trinity College) and qualified as a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries in 1975, and subsequently obtained his PhD and DSc in actuarial science from City University. He has worked at Prudential Assurance and for the Government Actuary’s Department, and has been a member of the Council of the Institute of Actuaries. He is currently a member of the Financial Reporting Council’s Board for Actuarial Standards and Legal and General’s Longevity Science Advisory Panel. He is co-author of five books and has published a large number of research papers on a wide range of topics, including mortality and morbidity models, longevity, annuities, insurance pricing and pensions. His papers have won research prizes from the Institute of Actuaries (UK) and the Society of Actuaries (US). He has acted as a consultant to Deutsche Bank, Swiss Reinsurance, the FSA, Lucida and the National Audit Office among others.

Hans Hack laeds the Financial Services practice in the Brussels office FTI Consulting. He specialises in the broad array of EU financial services regulation, as well as the legislative processes of the Union. He was previously Financial Attaché at the Netherlands Permanent Representation to the EU. In this capacity he was in charge of negotiations for the Netherlands on all EU financial services legislation.

I work for the Centre for Evidence-Based Conservation as a Postdoctoral Research Officer. The CEBC works with researchers, policy-makers, and stakeholders to produce evidence-based guidelines on environmental conservation. I conduct systematic reviews of the literature. As a conservation biologist I understand that the interface between science research and applied environmental management is a critical one in shaping the future of our conservation activities. Conservation successes depend strongly on a solid link between grass-roots management and high quality research.

I am the Martin Currie Professor in Finance & Investment at The University of Edinburgh. I publish and lecture on a range of topics in finance, banking and investments. I have developed and delivered executive education programmes around finance, investment management, banking and bank regulation for major global banks and asset management firms. I also act as an advisor/consultant to commercial and central banks as well as to asset management firms on finance, investment and banking issues. I research and publish on banking, finance and asset management topics, including: - the factors behind bank risk-taking and systemic risk; - corporate governance and the risk/return profile of organisations; - bank regulation, especially capital adequacy under Basel; - portfolio optimization using alternative assets; and - insurance securitization and insurance-linked securities such as catastrophe bonds. My work has been published in leading international journals. I am one of the authors of ‘Size, Risk and Governance in European Banking’ a book which has just been published with Oxford University Press.

Mr Alistair Haig

Alistair joined the University of Edinburgh Business School in May 2012 following 15 years working in buy and sell side quantitative research, investment analysis and investment risk for AEGON (now Kames Capital), UBS and Baillie Gifford. At UBS he worked with fund managers based in Australia and the Asia Pacific region to build investment strategies and risk analytics. He has presented at investment conferences in the UK, Australia and Asia. Alistair is a CFA charter holder and studied economics at Strathclyde University (BA) and economics and finance at Warwick Business School (MSc).
