Prof Charles Goodhart
Prof. Emeritus of Banking and Finance
Charles Goodhart, CBE, FBA is Emeritus Professor of Banking and Finance with the Financial Markets Group at the London School of Economics, having previously, 1987-2005, been its Deputy Director. Until his retirement in 2002, he had been the Norman Sosnow Professor of Banking and Finance at LSE since 1985. Before then, he had worked at the Bank of England for seventeen years as a monetary adviser, becoming a Chief Adviser in 1980. In 1997 he was appointed one of the outside independent members of the Bank of England's new Monetary Policy Committee until May 2000. Earlier he had taught at Cambridge and LSE.

• Economist with long-term experience in applied quantitative work, international and development finance, banking regulation and macroeconomic policy analysis. Recent research has included potential sources of development finance, developing country policy responses to the global financial crisis, capital flows to emerging economies and South-South financial flows, macroeconomic policy management in developing countries, impacts of emerging China on other developing countries, capital account liberalization and impacts of Basel Capital Accords on development finance. Long-term experience in government (Brazil) involving macroeconomic analysis, with emphasis on foreign debt and its connection with macroeconomic and fiscal stability. • Has worked as consultant to the UK Department for International Development, European Commission, G-24, UN-DESA, UNCTAD, UNDP, UNRISD and the governments of various sub-Saharan African countries, including the government of Ethiopia, to which he has provided technical assistance and capacity building on macro-econometric modeling and forecasting. • Has edited the book The Basel Capital Accords in Developing Countries: Challenges for Development Finance (2010), and co-edited the books Inequality in Latin America: Issues and Challenges for the 21st Century (2006) and International Capital Flows in Calm and Turbulent Times: The Need for New International Architecture (2003). • Director, MPhil in Development Studies, 2001-2004 and Programme Convenor of MA Globalisation and Development (2008-2009), IDS, University of Sussex.
